Description: Set below the verdant slopes of the spectacular Usambara and Pare Eastern Arc Mountain ranges and overseen by the iconic snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi is a breathtaking park, exhibiting unique natural treasures and an immense sense of space. A game reserve since 1951, this new National Park takes its name from Pare tribe’s word for “scoop of water,” referring to little water. Mkomazi is a vital refuge for two highly endangered species, the charismatic black rhino and sociable African wild dog, both of which were successfully reintroduced in the 1990s.

Location: Northern circuit, 3.5 hours from Moshi

Things 2 Do: Game Drives, Guided Walks, Night Game Drives, Sundowners, Visits to Conservation Projects

Time: 2 nights is optimal given the transit time to get to/from the park.

Animals: Giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala and grant’s gazelle share the park with elephants, buffalo and numerous predators including lions, leopards and cheetah. “My overall experience with Access 2 Tanzania was excellent. Karen was great from the start until the end of the safari trip. She was prompt in responding to all emails and phone calls. She was able to answer every question we had and was very knowledgeable of all aspects of the trip. The itinerary of the safari was planned perfectly around everything that we wanted to see and do. In addition, I cannot say enough good things about our guide, Noel. Noel was also very knowledgeable of all of the wildlife and navigating the areas of the safari that we went on. He was also a pleasure to be around for the entire week and made us feel very comfortable with everything, including checking in with the lodges, the hot air balloon, and our flight out of the Serengeti. Noel made it a point to make us happy and satisfied with all aspects of the safari. I would absolutely recommend anyone taking a trip to Tanzania to use Access 2 Tanzania and to also specifically request Noel as their guide!”
